Vintage Chromolithograph Americas Map After "Atlantis Pars Altera" Atlas

A vintage chromolithograph after a map of the Americas published in a 1595 atlas titled Atlantis Pars Altera, Geographia Nova Totius Mundi (The Other Side of Atlantis, Geography Map of the World). The map, originally drawn by artist Michael Mercator, was created to finish the atlas begun by his grandfather, listed Flemish artist Gerhard Mercator (1512-1594). The map shows 16th-century depictions of North, South and Central America, with Terra Australis Nondum Cognita (The Southern Land Not Yet Known) to the south, as well as inset maps of Cuba, the Gulf of Mexico and Hispaniola. The map is titled in Latin to the lower right with America siue India Nova (America or New India). The print is presented under glass in a wooden frame with wire to the back for hanging. The frame backing includes a mid-century Smith’s framer’s sticker to the verso.

- wear to finish of frame; damage and discoloration to paper backing of frame; fading to print with age.
