An unstretched oil on canvas study of a standing female nude with a raised arm by Emily Burling Waite (American, 1887 – 1980). The figure is shown in side profile, her head turned away from the viewer and with her right leg bent. The verso marked “Waite.” This portrait was executed as a student at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston where she studied from 1908 through 1910 under Philip Leslie Hale and Francis Luis Mora. In 1910 she would receive the Paige Traveling Scholarship and would travel for two years through France, Spain, the Netherlands, Czechoslovakia and Italy.
Condition
Cracking and loss to paint. Significant creasing. Back shows discoloration and staining to canvas.
