An unstretched oil on canvas study of a standing female nude by Emily Burling Waite (American, 1887 – 1980). The figure is holding a now darkened peacock feather with one bent knee as she gazes past the viewer. The verso marked “Waite.” This portrait was executed as a student at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston where she studied from 1908 through 1910 under Philip Leslie Hale and Francis Luis Mora. In 1910 she would receive the Paige Traveling Scholarship and would travel for two years through France, Spain, the Netherlands, Czechoslovakia and Italy.
Condition
Cracking and loss to paint. Significant creasing. Holes made by removed staples. Tear to left bottom edge. Back shows discoloration and staining to canvas.
