Signed Group of Peter Max Offset Lithographs

Item Details

A signed group of offset lithographs designed by well-listed and renowned German-American Pop artist Peter Max (1937 -). The left half of the image depicts a brightly-colored psychedelic composition of faces and vivid patterns swirling together. The right half of the image depicts small reproductions of three transit broadsides designed by the artist, with the heading ‘Peter Max’s Art in Transit’ printed as a header. The right image is signed and dated 2001 in Sharpie. The pieces are double-matted in pink and blue and are presented behind acrylic glass in a black composite frame with a hanging wire. Max received his formal art education in the 1950s at the Art Students League of New York in Manhattan, where he studied under the tutelage of Frank J. Reilly. Max began his career in illustration and graphic arts by creating collage-based works using elements taken from antique photographs. His interest in astronomy led to his self-described “Cosmic ’60s” period, where his art became a symbol of the counter-culture with its flamboyant use of bright rainbow colors and psychedelic images. American icons such as Bill Clinton, Taylor Swift, and Mohammed Ali appear in his works, along with other elements such as the Statue Of Liberty, peace signs, butterflies, and flying saucers.
