1925 "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio" Translated by Herbert Giles, First American Edition

Item Details

A hardcover volume of Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio, Herbert Giles’ translation of 164 Chinese tales of the supernatural, originally by Pu Songling (1640-1715). This is the first American edition, published in 1925 by Boni and Liveright of New York. The collection helped revive interest in traditional Chinese short stories. Herbert Giles (1845-1935) was a British diplomat serving in China in the late 19th century who published his Chinese-English Dictionary in 1892, and who modified Thomas Wade’s system of transliterating Chinese characters into Latin letters to create the Wade-Giles system of romanization.
