Charles DeWolf Brownell Watercolor Painting on Paper "Lyme, Connecticut"

Item Details

A watercolor painting on paper titled Lyme, Connecticut by well-listed American watercolorist Charles de Wolf Brownell (1882-1909). Created on October 9th, 1853, the work depicts a pastoral landscape with grazing cattle among the verdant hills. Marked to the upper left corner in ink; titled and dated in the lower right corner in ink. Dry mounted under a single layer of white mat, under acrylic, and presented in a gilt frame. To the verso is a label for the acrylic and for the Borghi Fine Art Gallery in Englewood, NJ. Also included is a catalog from the Hirschl & Adler Galleries exhibition.

Brownell is most well-known for his landscapes of New England and international scenes. A contemporary and friend to Hudson River School artists like Frederic Edwin Church, Brownell’s work reveal a similar romantic sentiment for the natural world. Brownell was born in Providence, Rhode Island and was raised in East Hartford, Connecticut. He became a lawyer in New England but abandoned law in his early 30s for painting. His international scenes include Cuba, Mexico, South America, and more. During his lifetime, Brownell exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art Museum. Today, his works can be found in the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art (Hartford, CT), the Milwaukee Art Museum, and numerous private collections.
