Item Details

A watercolor painting on paper titled Gulf – Noon by well-listed American watercolorist Charles DeWolf Brownell (1882-1909). The work depicts an ocean scene with waves. Marked illegibly in ink to the upper left corner and titled in ink to the upper right corner. Dry mounted under a single layer of white matting, under acrylic, in a gilt frame. To the verso is a label for the acrylic and a pair of gallery labels for the Hirschl & Adler Galleries in Manhattan and Michael Borghi Fine Art in Tenefly, NJ. Also included is a catalog from the Hirschl & Adler Galleries exhibition.

Brownell is most well-known for his landscapes of New England and international scenes. A contemporary and friend to Hudson River School artists like Frederic Edwin Church, Brownell’s work reveal a similar romantic sentiment for the natural world. Brownell was born in Providence, Rhode Island and was raised in East Hartford, Connecticut. He became a lawyer in New England but abandoned law in his early 30s for painting. His international scenes include Cuba, Mexico, South America, and more. During his lifetime, Brownell exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art Museum. Today, his works can be found in the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art (Hartford, CT), the Milwaukee Art Museum, and numerous private collections.
