Brownell is most well-known for his landscapes of New England and international scenes. A contemporary and friend to Hudson River School artists like Frederic Edwin Church, Brownell’s work reveal a similar romantic sentiment for the natural world. Brownell was born in Providence, Rhode Island and was raised in East Hartford, Connecticut. He became a lawyer in New England but abandoned law in his early 30s for painting. His international scenes include Cuba, Mexico, South America, and more. During his lifetime, Brownell exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art Museum. Today, his works can be found in the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art (Hartford, CT), the Milwaukee Art Museum, and numerous private collections.
