Charles DeWolf Brownell Watercolor Painting on Paper "Over the Ship's Side"

Item Details

A watercolor painting on paper titled Over the Ship’s Side by well-listed American watercolorist Charles DeWolf Brownell (1882-1909). The work depicts the ocean’s depths in multiple tones of blue. Titled in ink to the lower right corner and marked with numeric information in ink to the upper left corner. Dry mounted under a single layer of white mat, under acrylic glass, in a gilt frame. To the verso is a descriptive label for the acrylic. Also included is a catalog from the Hirschl & Adler Galleries exhibition.

Brownell is most well-known for his landscapes of New England and international scenes. A contemporary and friend to Hudson River School artists like Frederic Edwin Church, Brownell’s work reveal a similar romantic sentiment for the natural world. Brownell was born in Providence, Rhode Island and was raised in East Hartford, Connecticut. He became a lawyer in New England but abandoned law in his early 30s for painting. His international scenes include Cuba, Mexico, South America, and more. During his lifetime, Brownell exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art Museum. Today, his works can be found in the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art (Hartford, CT), the Milwaukee Art Museum, and numerous private collections.
