Boris Lovet-Lorski Brass Sculpture "Polynesian Lady"

Item Details

A circa 1970s cast brass sculpture with a black patina by very well-listed Lithuanian-American artist Boris Lovet-Lorski (1894 – 1973), titled Polynesian Lady. The sculpture depicts the form a nude woman’s figure, her hair piled into an aesthetic crown. She stands atop a rectangular base, all cast in one piece. Lovet-Lorski is best known for his renderings of the female nude that epitomize the modernist aesthetic of Art Deco. He has created this iconic figure in a variety of sizes and mediums, including marble, bronze, and brass. The artist’s signature is incised into the back of the figure’s leg. The sculpture was cast at the world renowned Bedi-Makky Art Foundry in Brooklyn, where a plethora of iconic castings by artists such as Gaston Lachaise and Alexander Archipenko have created work. This piece comes from Alan Brown Gallery in New York, who acquired it directly from Armand Gilani, a foundry worker at the Bedi-Makky Art Foundry.

Lovet-Lorski was born in Lithuania and immigrated to America in 1925 during the year of his first solo exhibition. His work is housed in collections across the world, including Boston University, the British Museum, and the Los Angeles Museum of Art.
