Handwoven Guatemalan Backstrap Textile

Item Details

A handwoven Guatemalan backstrap textile, crafted with yarn hand-dyed from natural plant materials. The intricate imagery, crafted with obvious love and attention to detail, resembles rows of stylized avian creatures against a black striped ground. This textile was left incomplete, with the loom rod still in place before the cotton warp. This stunning piece of Guatemalan folk art can be easily hung on a wall with the hanging string attached to the top wooden rod. Backstrap weaving is an ancient folk art practiced in many countries around the world. Traditionally, Mayan women of Guatemala incorporate this art into their everyday lives, weaving textiles for clothing for their families, tablecloths, baby slings, bags, towels and much more.
