Item Details
Charcoal on paper
An original minimalist charcoal portrait on paper by well regarded Cincinnati artist Paul Chidlaw (1900 – 1989). The piece depicts the head of a woman, outlined in simple black linework. She smiles softly, her short bob framing her angular face. The drawing is signed in charcoal to the lower left. It is matted in black and presented behind glass in a wooden frame with cast surface embellishments, gold tone finish, and a hanging wire. Chidlaw taught at both Our Lady of Cincinnati College (now part of Xavier University) and the Art Academy of Cincinnati from 1946 to 1963 where he was also a student from 1919 to 1923 before going on to study at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Fountainbleu, France. Chidlaw’s art is highly revered and is displayed at the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University as well as many private collections.
