Clintel Steed Oil Painting on Canvas of Adam and Eve

Item Details

An oil painting on canvas of Adam and Eve by listed artist Clintel Steed (New York, b. 1977), created circa 2012. The painting depicts a male and female figure, presumably Adam and Eve, in a fruit-bearing tree that appears to be emerging from a body of water below. Eve appears unconscious as Adam tries to lift her from the water, and two apples hang from the tree waiting to be picked. The work is rendered in vibrant colors, thick impasto, and gestural brushstrokes that are characteristic of Steed’s style. No signature, date, or title was found on the work. It is ready to hang with a pair of d-rings affixed to the verso. For more information about the artist, see the link below.

Clintel Steed grew up in a predominantly African American and Pentecostal community, this is an evident influence in his paintings. His work is a personal dialogue with African American culture, contemporary politics, and the Biblical struggle between good and evil. Much of his work is rendered in a thick impasto technique featuring expressionistic brushstrokes loosely applied throughout his compositions. He acquired his formal artistic training at the Art Institute of Chicago receiving a BFA in 1999 and his MFA from Indiana University in 2001. During his artistic career, he presented his work in multiple locations including the Indiana University Art Museum, New York Studio School and the National Academy of Design, among others.
