Nicholas Barbieri Mixed Media Painting "Torus"

Item Details

An original oil and acrylic painting on canvas titled Torus by artist Nicholas Barbieri (American, 1942-2013). The painting depicts two large looping squiggles forming a larger circular area, with overlapping squiggles applied in hues of red, orange, and yellow against a red background. The dripped and splattered pigments, gestural brushstrokes, and compulsive repetition displays a sense of controlled spontaneity in the composition. No signature or date was found on the canvas, however, the title is written on the stretcher to the verso.

Nicholas Barbieri is best known his use of repetitive circular motions in his abstract expressionist style paintings. He received his BFA with honors from Pratt Institute and continued his art education with a MFA at Lehman College. Barbieri’s exploration of the visual relationships and effects of light on form, structure, and space have evolved over his four decade career. He has participated in many solo and group exhibitions and has his work in many private collections including the Clock Tower Gallery, Empire State Building-5th Avenue Gallery, Hundred Acres Gallery, and in The Hudson River Museum.
