Pastel on paper
A pastel drawing on paper of a floral still life scene by well-listed American artist Emily Burling Waite (Massachusetts/Rhode Island; 1887 – 1980). On blue paper, the work depicts a lily plant with four orange blooms with yellow centers. The piece is not visibly signed by the artist. Under a single layer of white mat, the item is presented under glass and housed in a decorative gold-tone frame. Hanging wire is present to the verso.
Waite was best known for her oil portraits, still life paintings, and etchings. She studied at the Art Students League in New York City and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston under Philip Leslie Hale and Francis Luis Mora. Her work has been collected by numerous institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, among many others.
