Item Details
Pastel on paper
An original pastel portrait on paper of Lemuel Manchester by Emily Burling Waite (Massachusetts/Rhode Island, 1887–1980). The portrait depicts the artist’s son, a strawberry blonde young man who is often portraited in Waite’s paintings. The drawing is designed with a multicolored palette and depicts a portrait of Lemuel in an outdoor setting playing the ukulele, gazing down as he plays. The work is signed and dated by the artist in brown pastel to the lower right corner. Presented behind glass in a wooden frame with white matting and a hanging wire to the verso.
Throughout her career, Waite’s son, Lemuel A. W. Manchester (d. 2014) acted as a model. His father was Arthur Williams Manchester of Newport, Rhode Island. Waite and Manchester had a brief marriage that lasted from 1921 until 1931.
Waite was best known for her oil portraits, still life paintings, and etchings. She studied at the Art Students League in New York City and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston under Philip Leslie Hale and Francis Luis Mora. Her work has been collected by numerous institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, among many others.
