Original George Willis Oil on Canvas Painting

An original George Willis Oil on Canvas painting from the mid nineteenth century, or perhaps earlier. This painting is possibly, but not certainly attributable to, George William Willis (fl.1845 – 1869). The painting is entitled ‘The Old Violinist,’ as signified by the tag to the verso, and is signed George Willis to the bottom right hand corner. This painting features an incredible portrait of an elderly gentleman, clad in antiquarian finery, soulfully invested in playing his violin. The painting was varnished at some point, most likely in efforts of preservation, and does exhibit some crackling to the surface, but is otherwise in beautiful condition. The painting is presented in a lovely gilt wood frame with thorough embellishments of the floral persuasion in low relief.

Condition

Considering its age this painting looks phenomenal, both the painting itself and the frame in which it is housed exhibit the wear of ages, but not to a significant degree.
