1808 Engraving After Adam Buck "Young Robert Burns at the Grave of his Father"

An 1808 engraving published by William Holland and engraved by M.N. Bate after an original drawing by listed British artist Adam Buck (1759-1833). The print, titled Young Burns at the Grave of his Father, depicts the Scottish poet Robert Burns as a boy, standing next to the headstone of his father William Burnes. Burns is shown dressed in traditional Scottish garb, wearing a red sweater and green kilt with matching shawl. The print is titled to the center above a written excerpt on young Burns from the Burns Letters. The engraving is marked with printer and artist notes to the base of the image, including ‘Buck del.’, ‘Bate sculpt.’ and ‘London, Published August 1, 1808, by William Holland’. The print is matted in dark yellow and presented under glass in a wooden frame with gold tone bevel and wire to the back for hanging. Another copy of this engraving is part of the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum collection maintained by the National Trust for Scotland.
