Bronze Plated Pirate Statues After Paul Herzel
Item Details
A pair of bronze plated pirate statues after Paul Herzel (1876 – 1956). Both sculptures depict a pirate in the exact same pose: head turned looking off in the distance, one hand on his hip, the other arm outstretched holding a sword with the tip resting on the ground. The larger sculpture depicts the pirate’s right foot resting on a rope, the smaller sculpture depicts it resting on a small chest. The larger sculpture is signed by Paul Herzel to the mold. The manufacturer’s label has fallen off of the bottom but it appears to be one made by the Pompeian Bronze Company in the first half of the 20th century. The smaller sculpture has a manufacturer’s label on the base reading ‘Armor Bronze of Taunton, Mass’ and the manufacturers name stamped in the mold on the backside. The smaller piece does not bear Herzel’s signature.
Paul Herzel was a German/American prize winning sculptor and painter. He is known primarily for the sculptural designs he sold to The Pompeian Bronze Company which were reproduced as bookends, ashtrays, lamp bases and statuettes.
