Chinese Spirit Tablet and Brass Phoenix Tray
Item Details
A Chinese spirit tablet and a brass tray with a Chinese phoenix design. Also included are two ornate frames intended to house spirit tablets, only one of which is included here. The frames are made of wood with red paint and gold-tone detail. Both feature elaborately carved, gold-tone crest rails and pedestals. The larger of the pair is tagged with a typewritten caption that reads ‘Ancestral Tablet.’ The smaller houses a spirit tablet with the central inscriptions ‘The Ancestors of the Ancestral Hall’ (本門堂上歷代祖先 Ben men tangshang lidai zuxian). Also included is a round brass tray, the face of which is etched with a phoenix design amid foliage, encircled by bands of scrollwork and abstract elements. It includes a hook on the back for hanging.
Condition
- to fair; the crest rail is loose on one of the tablets; there are scuff marks and scratches to both tablets; the backing is missing on the larger tablet, which also has damp stains and significant chipping and wearing away of paint.
