Emily Waite Aquatint Etching on Paper

Item Details

An aquatint etching on paper by well-known artist Emily Burling Waite (1887 – 1980). Depicted is a seated woman holding a blue towel over her shoulders and looking downwards. A figure is working the woman’s hair through pins to create a wave texture similar to what is framing the woman’s face. Waite has signed this piece in graphite to the lower right within the print margin. Presented behind glass in a white mat and gold tone frame. A horizontal hanging wire is present to the verso.

Waite was best known for her oil portraits, still life paintings, and etchings. She studied at the Art Students League in New York City and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston under Philip Leslie Hale and Francis Luis Mora. Her work has been collected by numerous institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, among many others.
