Charles Appel Oil Painting on Canvas Romantic Landscape

Item Details

An oil painting on canvas of a romantic landscape by well-listed artist Charles Appel (New Jersey, 1857-1928). This Tonalist work features a body of water with a man in a boat floating in from the left. Large trees stand prominently in the left foreground, and hills are silhouetted against a colorful glowing sky that’s reflected in the water. With blurred forms, frothy pigments, and dusky colors contrasted with glowing light, the artist captures a peaceful location retreated from civilization. The work is signed in black to the lower left; it is presented in black and gold-tone wood frame with rustic wood grain accents and d-rings affixed to the verso. Known for his romantic landscapes, Appel studied at the New York School of Art under William Merritt Chase and Luis Mora and at the Art Students League in New York with Frank DuMond.
