An original oil painting on canvas titled ‘The Evening…’ by W. J. Rolfe Depicted is a landscape with tombstones in the foreground of the composition and the bell tower of a church depicted in the middle ground to the left. A figure walks on the pathway towards the right of the composition as a figure in the stands amongst the tombstones. The setting sun causes the sky to change colors with the upper portion of the sky remaining blue with gradient tones of red and orange cover the majority of the sky. This piece is signed in the lower left corner and comes housed in an ornate black wood frame. To the verso, an old label is present to the upper portion of the frame written illegibly it gives the title and artist name. A horizontal hanging wire is present to the verso and this piece comes ready to hang.
Condition
- fair; paint loss along right side of composition; relined with wax; craquelure.
