Anton Mauve Oil on Canvas of Cart Driver

Item Details

A Realist oil on canvas of a cart driver by well-listed Dutch artist Anton Mauve (1838-1888). This work features a single horse-drawn cart and a driver on the horse’s back, a quintessential subject for the artist. The work is signed to the lower right corner. It is presented in an outsanding and fitting period gold-tone wood frame with a relief design of floral accents and scrollwork.

Anton Mauve was a nineteenth-century Dutch Realist artist and a leading member of the Hague School in the Netherlands. He was known for his paintings of rural and animal subjects most akin to the Barbizon Period. Mauve was an early influence on Van Gogh who worked in Mauve’s studio for a few years; he was also married to Van Gogh’s cousin Ariëtte Carbentus (1856-1894).
