1753-54 First Editions of "Shakespear Illustrated" in Three Volumes by Charlotte Lennox

A three-volume set of the first editions of Shakespear Illustrated: or the Novels and Histories on Which the Plays of Shakespear Are Founded, Collected and Translated from the Original Authors, with Critical Remarks. The first two volumes of this set were printed in 1753 and the third was printed in London in 1754 ‘for A. Millar in the Strand.’ Each of these volumes is fully bound in leather with faint gilt lines framing its covers and adorning the edges. Spines feature raised bands and gilt lettering and ornamentation. These books were written by Charlotte Lennox (c. 1730-1804), or ‘Author of the Female Quixote,’ and are a critical, expository examination of Shakespeare’s works.

Condition

- volume one: discoloration to pages; spine is broken, book is in two pieces; cover is almost completely detached; redrot and general extensive wear to binding; exposed boards at corners; foxing; chipping to spine ends; inscriptions.
- volume two: cover is detached; heavy foxing to endpapers and moderately throughout; inscriptions; redrot; exposed boards at corners; spotting to fore edges; extensive wear.
- volume three: inscriptions; cover is mostly detached; spine is broken, book is in two pieces; chipping to spine ends; exposed boards; foxing; discoloration; redrot; extensive wear.
- all volumes would benefit from extensive binding repair or rebinding.
