Handwoven "Sarouk" Style Rug

Item Details

A handwoven Persian wool rug, labeled as ‘Sarouk’ style. The label identifies it as having been produced in Iran, the site of areas of rug weaving such as Isfahan and Kashan, which also produce complex and elaborate designs for high quality carpets. This large rug has a lobed medallion in the center of a garnet red field heavily populated by naturalistic flowers and foliage. The colors found in the medallion, navy, indigo, garnet, pink, salmon, ivory, and ochre, are used in the overall pattern as well as in the borders. The spandrels are primarily dark blue with more arching flowers and scrolling leaving in the lighter shades. There are palm or heart-shaped elements to be found in the spandrels as well as in the borders. This combination of colors and motifs is repeated in the main border which is flanked by narrow guard borders in ivory and blue with small rosettes. It has a wool warp fringe to either end, and plackets applied to the underside to prevent curling. Unmarked.
