Utagawa Hiroshige Woodcuts From "The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido"

A set of two Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints after listed Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川 広重, 1797-1858). Both prints are from the series The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō (東海道五十三次 Tōkaidō gojūsan tsugi), which depicts sites along the road from Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto. Featured is Station #5 Hodogaya: Distant View of the Kamakura Mountains from the Rest House by the Boundary Tree at Hodogaya (Station #5) (程ケ谷: 境木立場鎌倉山遠望 Hodogaya: Kyōboku tateba Kamakurayama enbō). Also featured is Station #6 Totsuka: View of Mt. Fuji from the Mountain Road near Totsuka (戸塚: 山道より不二眺望 Totsuka: Sandō yori Fuji chōbō). Both images come from the Tate-e or ‘Vertical’ edition of the Fifty-Three Stations, originally produced in 1855. Each has the series, print title and subtitle printed within cartouches in the upper right corner, with the artist’s ‘Hiroshige hitsu’ (広重筆) printed signature within a separate cartouche. The prints are matted in wood veneer and presented under glass in bamboo motif wooden frames with wire to the back for hanging.
