A signed photograph of Pablo Picasso by Wilhelm ‘Willy’ Maywald (German, 1907-1985). The black and white photograph depicts a shirtless Picasso sitting on the beach with an umbrella behind him taken in 1947. The photograph is signed ‘W. Maywald’ in the lower right corner and was given as a personal gift to the seller’s Aunt. The piece is matted in black which is painted on the glass, under glass, and set in a wood frame.

Maywald was born in Kleve, Germany in 1907 and after studying Fine Art around Germany moved in Paris in 1931. There, he befriended and photographed various artists and creators such as Picasso, Christian Dior, and more. Maywald became well known for his black and white portraits of artists, celebrities, and fashion and his work was featured on the covers of prominent magazines such as Vanity Fair, Vogue, and more. Since his death in 1985 he has had several large retrospective shows in Berlin, New York, and Lyon, France.
