Tracy Sugarman Skinny Dipping Youth Celluloid Overlay Drawing
Item Details
Ink Wash
A celluloid overlay drawing by mid-20th century illustrator Tracy Sugarman (American, 1921 – 2013) depicting skinny dipping youth. The vintage ink drawing on board depicts skinny dipping male youth in collegiate clothing with a early 20th century automobile parked along a woodsy shoreline. The youth are in various states of undress with one boy leaning against the side of the vehicle with his eyes cast pensively to the right of the viewer. The artist creates an additional layer of depth and texture by adding a red celluloid overlay. This sheet has been scratched through to add shadow and to allude to the night or perhaps the approaching dawn. The board is signed in ink by the artist with an additional signature scratched through to the celluloid overlay. The celluloid is attached to the board with adhesive tape with a graphite notation. The board is stamped for Whatman’s Water Color Boards notations reading ‘July 51’, ‘371/1 set of 2 colors/see layout/Black on Zinc/Color on Copper/3069/1 – 2 Color.’
