The artwork depicts African Americans engaged in daily activities and conversation outside of a General Store. The print is numbered in pencil 341/925 at the lower left corner and signed at the lower right. The piece is presented with an off-white mat in a wood frame. Jack Meyers, a New Orleans native, was a self taught painter, known for his works in acrylic evoking Southern scenes. The scenes were primarily drawn from sketches and photographs – many his own, others found in libraries. Though criticized by some for scenes that seemed out of date, he expressed concern for loosing memory of the past ‘Living only in the past produces nostalgia; living only in the present produces irresponsibility; living only in the future is impossible because the future is yet to be. The real art of living, I believe, is blending equally the past, present, and concern for the future. Real art should reflect principle.’
