William H. Fry Carved Oak Panel with 1914 Cincinnati Museum Exhibition Label - Mounted in Table

An important Cincinnati art-carved oak panel, by William H. Fry (1830-1929), having an original exhibition label. The panel features a deep relief, naturalistic carving of a songbird, among leafy branches. The signed carving has an incised carved artist’s cypher, lower right and an incised arched border with carved upper corner spandrels, mounted in a deeply coved and mitered oak frame with carved border. The verso has an affixed paper label, from the ‘Cincinnati Museum Association – Twenty-First Annual Exhibition, 1914’. ‘Title: The Rambler, Artist: William H. Fry, Address: Art Academy, Return Address: (illegible), Price: $300.00 (1914)’.
The framed panel was crafted into a coffee table with turned oak legs, probably in the second quarter of the 20th century. The consignor is related to Henry Lindley Fry and his son, William Henry Fry, who along with Benn Pitman, began teaching mostly affluent women, the art and skill of wood carving, in the early 1870s.
Condition
- carved panel has losses to the birds beak. Panel originally was mounted in frame, on wall, later converted to table.
