Alex Ross Original Gouache Cover Art for July 1948 Issue of "Good Housekeeping"

Item Details

An original gouache painting on paper by very well-listed Scottish-born American illustrator, Alexander Sharpe Ross (1908 – 1990). Ross was one of the leading illustrators of the post-World War II America, along with the likes of Coby Whitmore, John Whitcomb, Al Parker, and Norman Rockwell. His work regularly appeared on the covers of American magazine staples such as Good Housekeeping, Saturday Evening Post, Ladies Home Journal and Colliers. The work presented here is the original cover art for the July 1948 issue of Good Housekeeping, depicting a happy little blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl half-buried in the warm sand at the seashore, her look-a-like doll propped up next to her against a beach ball, a subtle indication of the sea on the horizon. An original 1948 copy of the magazine is included with this piece. Artist signature is signed in ink to the lower left, where Ross has dedicated the piece to a Carl and Carolyn, with best wishes. The painting is mounted behind glass, under a brown linen liner in a beveled wood frame with a distressed gilt finish. Additional information about the artist is attached to the verso
