"River-Maine" Oil Painting on Canvas by Alice Judson

An original oil painting on canvas titled River-Maine by American listed artist Alice Judson (1876 – 1948). Signed by the artist to the lower left corner. Presented on canvas, housed in a wood frame with gesso accents in a gilt finish. To the verso, there is a handwritten title ‘River-Maine’ present to lower center and a gallery descriptive label.

Judson was born in Beacon, New York in 1876.Trained by one of the most influential American Impressionist landscape painter in the early nineteenth century, John Henry Twachtman (1853 – 1902) at the Art Students League in New York City. Under Twachtman’ s impressionist influence, Judson would create numerous maritime and seascape landscapes, converting this subject matter in her specialty, leading to an artistic success experienced in her 50’s. During her lifetime, she was a member of various artistic associations, including the Gloucester Society of Artists, National Academy of Woman Painters and Sculptors, and the Society of Independent artists, among others.

Here, an impressionist style harbor scene of the Maine River in Gloucester, Massachusetts rendered in vibrant tonalities, creating a perfect balance between light, color, and composition. The piece is a strong exponent of the artist’s recurrent subject manner and mastered technique.

- craquelure present to painting; Under UV light, several areas of inpainting along the composition; clean signature; never lined.
