18th c. George Edwards Bird Engraving

This captivating 18th century hand colored bird engraving titled ‘Blue-gray Flycatcher with Grasshopper’ still retains the vibrant colors and sharp details after over 250 years. Originally engraved by George Edwards (English 1694-1773) and published in his book ‘A History of Uncommon Birds’ in 1743. In 1749, German engraver Johann Seligmann re-engraved Edward’s plates for the book ‘Sammlung Verschiedener Ausiandischer un Seletner Vogel’. Botanical details and scenic backgrounds were added for a superb and desirable effect, in this particular engraving, a large grasshopper was included at the foot of the bird. George Edwards was considered to be the Father of Ornithology and one of the most important naturalists of the ‘Age of Enlightenment’. He was a skilled observer and his detailed descriptions and images of birds provided the reference material for renowned biologist Carolus Linnaeus to name over 350 species of birds. Edwards studied art in Holland and Norway and mastered his etching techniques by working with the leading English naturalist Mark Catesby. The opportunity to acquire one of these 18th century hand colored engravings is increasingly rare and seldom does a group of twelve, framed alike, present themselves. This engraving is professionally finished under glass with a creamy white mat and a beautiful burled wood and gold frame. Condition
The engraving is in remarkable condition, especially considering the fact that it is over 250 years old. Little to no foxing, the colors are vibrant and the detailing is crisp. Beautifully framed, ready to hang.
