An oil painting on canvas titled Blue Winter by listed artist George W. Picknell (American, 1864-1943). The work is signed in the lower right, and housed in a beveled gold-tone painted wood frame. Present to the verso are a descriptive label, various numeric inscriptions in ink, an orange decal, the remnant of a label to the lower center, and holes from previous screws.
George Picknell was a noted landscape painter and brother of fellow artist William Lamb Picknell (American, 1853-1897). This is a particularly striking nocturne subject for the artist, who was largely an impressionist painter.
Condition
- under the black light, there are several areas and lines of inpainting along the upper right, center left, lower right, and upper left; the signature is untouched; two perpendicular hairline cracks in the paint layers measuring 4” and 2” long are present to the center of the work, above the leaves of the fallen tree; minor wear has resulted in layers of gold-tone paint having been lost from the frame, concentrated along the edges and the lower right; the canvas has been relined and a sheet of foam core board is attached to the stretcher bars to protect the verso; a scuff to the foam core is present to the upper right.
