Exceptional Handwoven Kazak Cloud-band Chondzoresk Area Rug

Item Details

A handwoven Kazak cloud-band Chondzoresk area rug. Rugs of this type are classed within the Karabakh group, and here Kazak symbols are seen, referencing Caucasian ‘dragon carpets.’ It features three roughly hexagonal medallions to the field in sapphire blue and rich green, each with the traditional cloud-band motif in reds, white, apricot and cherry red, with a central figural animal to the center flanked by smaller bird forms. The surrounding field is a vibrant cherry red, filled with arrowhead quatrefoils, geometricized leaf forms and kochnak ram’s horn medallions. The corner spandrels feature large blue ewer elements. The field is framed by a reciprocal medahil border in apricot and blue. The primary border is of a defined crab pattern in the same palette, with bright chartreuse green and saffron. It has bright yellow and red barber pole borders with a checked triple overcast edge, and a decorative kilim skirt. It has hand-tied natural undyed wool warp fringe to either end, with production tags to the reverse. The wool throughout has a variegated and slightly glossy appearance. Very fine workmanship.
