An original signed sepia tone photograph of an Inuit man by filmmaker Robert Joseph Flaherty. (American, 1884-1951). The work is an evocative portrait of a Native Alaskan, his head shown turned to the right, displaying the left side of his weathered face. The man wears an embroidered cap and open-necked top, tied at the neck. The photograph is signed in pencil to the lower right margin and displayed under glass in a light cream matte and beveled gold and black frame.
Robert Joseph Flaherty, born in Iron Mountain, Michigan, was an American filmmaker who both directed and produced the very first commercially successful full length film, Nanook of the North. Flaherty is considered a pioneer in the field of documentary films.
