Photograph and Signed Books on the USS "Monitor"

Item Details

A photograph and signed books on the USS Monitor. The three items in this lot concern the Civil War ironclad ship Monitor, known for ‘the Battle of the Ironclads’ in 1862. The metal frame photograph of the underwater wreck is covered in glass and wired ready to hang. The framing of the color digital print was finished by Michaels. A plaque on the frame reads ‘Over The Monitor – T. Walker Lloyd’. The books include U.S.S. Monitor: The Ship That Launched A Modern Navy by Lt. Edward M. Miller U.S.N. (Leeward Publications, 1978). It is signed by ‘T. Walker’ to his mother at Christmas 1979, and notes he was a member of the Monitor discovery expedition. The other title is the report of the expedition Investigating The Remains of the U.S.S. Monitor: A Final Report on 1979 site testing in the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, published by NOAA. It is signed ‘E Miller’. The USS Monitor , a Union ship, changed naval warfare with its iron hull and revolving turret. She was lost at sea off the Outer Banks later in 1862. That area is now known as Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, founded in 1975.
