Early 20th Century Japanese "Kesa" (Monk's Robe)

An early 20th century) Japanese Kesa (monk’s robe) in a deep aubergine and metallic gold kinran textile having an allover arabesque floral pattern. Kinran textiles were made in Japan, usually at Nishijin, in Kyoto, typically displaying floral patterns in gold against silk in a dark color. The lining of the garment is beige rinzu silk with a braided silk cord which was used to secure the garment at the shoulder. Several examples can be found at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Condition

Some wear to the silk lining, the outer fabric is in very good condition.
