A framed Civil War ordinance. This framed ‘Charleston Mercury’ document is a reproduction of the ordinance announcing to the city of Charleston, SC that the Union is dissolved. This ordinance announced the secession of the state of South Carolina. South Carolina was the first state to secede from the union, an action that would be followed soon after by other states at the very beginning of the Civil war. The ordinance was ‘passed unanimously at 1:15pm, December 20th, 1860.’ The first battle of the Civil War would take place months later in Charleston.
