Emily B. Waite Portrait of a Woman in White Dress Unstretched Oil on Canvas

Item Details

An unstretched oil on canvas by Emily Burling Waite (American, 1887 – 1980) of a woman in white dress. The early painting depicts a woman with an upswept ‘Gibson Girl’ type hairstyle in a white dress with purple sash typical of the early 20th century. She presents a sprig of flowers in her hands as she confronts the viewer with her gaze. The canvas is signed ‘E.B. WHITE’ to the verso of the canvas. During the early years of her career Waite used a variation of her initials, ‘E.B.W’ or E.B. Waite’ to disguise her gender and make her works more marketable. The subject of this painting also appears in item 16BOS080-038.
