Egyptian Art Papyrus Painting of Book of the Dead Funerary Scene
Item Details
An Egyptian gouache painting on papyrus. This large image depicts a funerary scene from the Book of the Dead describes the journey of the soul of a deceased person in the netherworld. The top panel shows the deceased on the left, to be judged before a panel of gods who will vote on his fate. The seven judges on the left are holding up the “Ankh”-key of life to vote for life, the other seven vote for eternal damnation by sitting still. The lower panel shows the soul of the deceased at left being led by the god Anubis into judgment, toward the scales of justice, where his heart is weighed against Maat’s feather. Ammit is standing below the scales. The soul is shown passing through to the right with Thoth on one side and Horus on the other, approaching the throne-room of Osiris. Signed S. Gharib within the print at lower left. Framed and matted under glass with hanging wire at back.
