Arthur Helwig Original Surreal Oil Painting on Board

An original oil painting on masonite board by notable Cincinnati artist Arthur Louis Helwig (1899-1976). This peculiar surreal painting depicts a woman in a gray jacket and pink floral hat standing in front of a blue rectangle, as several jockeys on horseback stand in the distance. Pale geometric shapes in shades of blue and green fill the rest of the space, divided by a long gray fence. The painting is signed to the lower right nad is presented in a wooden slat-style frame with white finish. Helwig was a notable artist and past president of the Cincinnati Art Club (1939 to 1941). Helwig was an active artist for over four decades and an instructor at the Cincinnati Art Academy. During this period he exhibited in galleries and museums in Europe and across the United States. He won a number of awards for his paintings and lithographs. Helwig studied under Theodore Dorl, Bessie Hoover Wessel and James Hopkins. He worked in watercolor, oils, and numerous printing methods and was also a well known mural painter. His works are housed at The Cincinnati Art Museum, Chicago Art Institute, The Philadelphia Museum and The Cleveland Art Museum.
