Attributed Charles De Belle "Coming Home" Oil Painting Ca 1920

Item Details

A framed original oil painting on board attributed to Charles de Belle, who was born in Hungary in 1873, and died in Canada in 1939. This work depicts a woman and child, perhaps refugees, traveling by foot and carrying their belongings in a cloth sack. The dark tones reflect the somber nature of their journey, and the style could be loosely called impressionistic, although with some elements of mystery in the manner of the French symbolist Odilon Redon. This piece presents in a molded wood frame with gold finish, and oatmeal linen mat with a gold nameplate to lower center. The reverse side bears the label of the ‘galerie d’art michel bigué,’ Quebec, indicating the title of work and artist’s name, and is wired for hanging.
