"Shark and it's Prey" Super Realism Original Painting by John Doherty (Ireland, 1949)
Item Details
Shark and it’s Prey original acrylic on stretched canvas by Irish born artist John Doerty (b. 1949) signed to the back and dated 2001. The painting is done in a super realism manner, almost appearing to be a photograph rather than a painting. Illustrated is the moored red bow of a larger well used boat facing a row of smaller fishing vessels in bright marine colors with their reflections on the water. Ropes and riggings in the foreground create dimension. The painting is presented in a thin gold wood frame.
John Doherty was born in County Kilkenny (1949) and trained initially as an architect at Bolton Street College in Dublin then later in Australia at the National College of Art in Papua New Guinea. Due to his architectural background, his signature subject is building facades in rural towns with an emphasis on doorways in vibrant paint. Auction records for Doherty’s paintings soared between 1984-2007 after solo exhibitions and winning several prestigious awards. His work can be found in many private collections as well as the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Institute of Modern Art, Chicago, Artbank, Sydney and the Irish National Stud, Dublin and London.
