"Smith Fruit and Vegetables" Original Acrylic on Canvas By Well Listed Irish Artist John Doherty, 2001
Item Details
Smith Fruit and Vegetables, The Coombe, Dublin, Ireland original acrylic on stretched canvas by Irish/Australian artist John Doherty (born 1949), dated 2001. The artist is known for his super realism style of painting which is evident in this large canvas illustrating the facade of an older red brick building with chipped turquoise door frames and rusty grated windows keeping the displayed fruit safe. Boarded up windows and a cracked sidewalk with weeds all lend toward the image of a sleepy rural town grocer. The large painting has been signed at the back on the blank edge of the canvas by the artist with the title and the date, it is in a flush thin wooden frame.
John Doherty was born in County Kilkenny (1949) and trained initially as an architect at Bolton Street College in Dublin then later in Australia at the National College of Art in Papua New Guinea. Due to his architectural background, his signature subject is building facades in rural towns with an emphasis on doorways in vibrant paint. Auction records for Doherty’s paintings soared between 1984-2007 after solo exhibitions and winning several prestigious awards. His work can be found in many private collections as well as the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Institute of Modern Art, Chicago, Artbank, Sydney and the Irish National Stud, Dublin and London.
