Important Sir Henry Raeburn Original Oil Painting on Canvas, "Portrait of C. Calvert R. W. S"
Item Details
An original oil painting on canvas by Sir Henry Raeburn titled C. Calvert R.W.S. The signed, original portrait, by Sir Henry Raeburn (Scottish, 1756-1823) depicts Charles Calvert (English, 1785–1852), a watercolorist and landscape painter, who is wearing a black coat and white ruffled cravat, against a black background. Calvert, one of the original founders of the Manchester Royal Institution (now the Manchester City Art Gallery) gazes confidently and serenely over his left shoulder. It is likely that Calvert and Sir Henry Raeburn were associates of one another in some circles, having worked during the same period and in the same region. The painting is presented in a fully restored, period-appropriate antique gilded wood frame, with a brass plate affixed to the bottom, which is marked ‘C. Calvert R. W. S. by Sir H. Raeburn R. A.’ The painting is signed to the original canvas lining, ‘C Calvert R.W.S by Sir H. Raeburn R.A.’ This signature portion of the original canvas lining can be viewed to the verso. Included with the painting is a ‘Paintings Treatment Report’, dated 21 September 2000, by the Art Conservation Center at the University of Denver (Colorado), where the painting and frame underwent restoration. The conservator’s report describes in detail the condition of the painting prior to and after the restoration procedure. Included with the report is a set of slides and film showing the X-rays and other images taken by the restoration team during the restoration process. Please note, a full documentary record of the restoration on this painting is retained by the ACC@DU, and can be accessed using the report number, 99-83 (see link).
