Utagawa Kunisada 19th-Century Ukiyo-e Woodblock Print "Doin hoshi"

A Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print by Japanese artist Utagawa Kunisada (歌川国貞 1786-1865), also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III (歌川豊国). Printed circa 1843-45, the print is titled Dōin Hōshi (道因法師) and is from Kunisada’s series One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets (百人一首之内 Hyakunin isshu no uchi). The poet Dōin, a Buddhist priest, is depicted alongside his poetry in a book shaped cartouche in the upper left corner. Below, a woman wearing a beautiful kimono holds a bag and a pipe with a large basket behind her. The artist’s “Kōchōrō Kunisada ga” (香朝楼国貞画) alongside a toshidama seal. A Hama Yahei and Kinugasa Fusajiro censor seal are printed above the Sano-ya Kihei publisher seal. The piece is displayed behind glass in a wooden frame with beige mat. Hanging hardware is attached to the verso.
