Helen Frankenthaler "Tales of Genji IV" Signed Limited Edition Woodcut on Handmade Paper

Item Details

*A signed limited edition woodcut on handmade paper titled Tales of Genji IV by American Abstract Expressionist, Helen Frankenthaler (1928 – 2011). Tales of Genji IV, created in 1998, is a twenty-one color woodcut and stencil from twelve woodblocks which features an abstract composition in neutrals, reds, whites, yellows, and green with visible wood grain texture. This piece is signed and numbered AP 12/12 to the lower right corner in pencil, and presented mounted in a gold painted wood frame and under glass.

Frankenthaler was one of the Abstract Expressionist movement’s most highly regarded pioneers. Influenced largely by her contemporaries including Jackson Pollock, Clement Greenberg, and Hans Hoffman, her paintings are simultaneously innovative in technique and sensual in style. She is best known for her large-scale and diaphanous “color field” canvasses created by a dilution of oil paints on unprepared canvas, allowing the paints to soak into the canvas and giving the impression of watercolors.
