Dixie Selden Oil Painting on Board

Item Details

An original oil painting on board by well-listed Cincinnati artist Dixie Selden (1868-1935). The painting depicts an outdoor courtyard with a small stone pool to the center and a bright pink tree. Two walls of the courtyard are visible with stone walls and orange tin roof. It is signed in her signature orange paint to the lower left. There is a Closson Galleries label affixed to the verso. Presented behind glass in a gilt frame with a hanging wire to the verso.

Selden born in Cincinnati attended McMicken School of Design (now the Art Academy of Cincinnati) on and off from 1884 to 1912 tutelage of Frank Duveneck who later became her mentor. She began exhibiting at the Covington Art Club in 1890 and in 1892 she helped found the Woman’s Art Club of Cincinnati. In her early years, Selden’s style was dark and influenced by the Munich school; she evolved into a lighter impressionistic style after 1909 and studying with William Merritt Chase in Venice, Italy.
